Servants Center

Ministry Description
Very simply, our mission is to “help the mentally ill homeless and poor get off and stay off the streets.”

Servants Center is a Christian organization in Grand Rapids focusing on the most neglected segment of the city’s homeless population: persons suffering from mental illness. Servants Center began in 1991 after recognizing that many of the habitually homeless in Grand Rapids suffered from mental illness which interfered with their ability to know what they needed to do to help themselves out of their homeless situation. Studies show that 30-40% of the chronically homeless are mentally ill, many with severe neurological brain disorders such as schizophrenia.

Servants Center provides high quality, relationship-based street outreach to help the mentally ill off the streets. And we don’t stop there. We also stay connected with them to help them get and keep the services they need to stay off the streets. By building a relationship of trust we can guide individuals into needed medical and mental health services, get their disability or retirement benefits reinstated or started, find appropriate housing, and work at stabilizing their life to keep them in housing, all while reflecting Christ in our words and actions.

Servants Center also serves as a court-appointed guardian for individuals that Probate Court feels lack the understanding or capacity to make informed decisions for themselves. And we serve as Social Security Representative Payee for individuals who are not able to properly budget their monthly disability income, as many are in jeopardy of losing or have lost their housing placement. Servants Center also receives requests for our services from Adult Protective Services, local hospitals, mental health agencies, Police, Social Security, Probate Court, and downtown businesses. Our services reach out into neighboring counties as well. The need for our services continues to grow.
